PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

ATC vet classification code QJ01 – antibacterial veterinary drugs for systemic use.

Bromodox is a combination drug that includes doxycycline and bromhexine.

Doxycycline is a bacteriostatic antibiotic that belongs to the tetracycline group.
It acts on the ribosomes of bacteria, preventing protein synthesis. The drug has a wide range of antimicrobial action against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (Staphylococcus spp., Diplococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus spp, Haemophilus influenza, E. coli, Pneumococci, Bacillus antracis, Clostridium tetani, Clostridium perfringes, Listeria monocytogens, Actinomyces spp., Entirobacter spp, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Yersinia spp.), as well as mycoplasmas (Mycoplasmaspp.), rickettsia (Rickettsia spp.) and chlamydia (Chlamydia spp.).

Bromhexin causes mucolytic (secretolytic) and expectorant effects. Mucolytic effect is associated with depolymerization and rarefaction of mucoprotein and mucopolysaccharide fibers, improves sputum separation, thus facilitating breathing.
One important feature of the action of bromhexin is its ability to stimulate the formation of surfactant – a mixture of surface-active substances of lipid-protein-mucopolysaccharide nature, which is synthesized in the cells of the alveoli.
Surfactant biosynthesis is impaired in various respiratory diseases caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum, Mycoplasma synoviae, Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale. This leads to a violation of the stability of alveolar cells, weakening their response to adverse effects.

When doxycycline is combined with bromhexin the concentration of the antibiotic in the upper respiratory tract secretion and in sputum increases, its absorption is accelerated, thus achieving high levels of doxycycline in the blood for a long time and accelerating the process of recovery.
Doxycycline is almost never metabolized and is eliminated from the body mainly with the feces in the form of inactive complexes and to a lesser extent with the urine.

INDICATIONS FOR USE

Treatment of cattle, sheep, goats and pigs for respiratory diseases (bronchopneumonia, pneumonia, swine enzootic pneumonia, atrophic rhinitis, etc.) and digestive tract diseases. ), digestive tract (colibacillosis, salmonellosis), as well as patients suffering from keratoconjunctivitis, hoof rot, staphylococcosis, rye, chlamydia, wound infections, arthritis and other diseases caused by microorganisms sensitive to doxycycline.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE AND DOSAGES

Intramuscularly once at a dose:

cattle, sheep, goats – 1.0 ml of the drug per 22lb (10kg) of animal body weight;

pigs – 0.5-1.0 ml of preparation per 22lb (10 kg) of body weight.

If necessary, the animal can be injected again only 48 hours after the first injection.

Due to possible local edema and pain reaction when the drug is injected in larger amount than 2.5 ml for piglets and lambs, 5.0 ml for adult pigs, sheep and calves, 10 ml for cattle, it is recommended to inject the drug in several places.

The drug is tested in advance on a small group (7 – 8 animals).
If no complications occur within 2 – 3 days the drug shall be used in the whole herd.
Administration during pregnancy and in lactating animals shall be allowed only in cases when sensitivity of the causative agent to the drug is determined and efficiency of administration exceeds possible economic losses.
Slaughter of animals for meat shall be allowed 21 days after the last drug administration.
Meat obtained before the specified date shall be utilized or fed to unproductive animals depending on the opinion of the veterinarian.
